The Sixth Naphtha Cracking Project
To alleviate the shortage of petrochemicals and to provide the raw materials to satisfy the demand for special chemicals and engineering plastics, in 1993, our group invests NT$ 574.4 B in the construction of the 6th Naphtha Cracking Project in Mai Liao, where is in Yunlin of mid-west Taiwan. The land-fill area, about 2652 hectares reclaimed from sea, in the project has also set a new record.
This project involves the construction of an industrial port: Mai Liao Port with an area of 476 hectares, and a production center for petroleum, electricity, and heavy machinery. It will include a refinery capable of processing 21 million metric tons of crude oil per year, a cracker with annual ethylene production capacity of 2.935 million metric tons, and more than 61 factories producing a variety of related intermediate materials. It will also feature an independent 4,200-megawatt power plant, a co-generation power plant and a heavy machinery shop.
This project utilizes the most advanced processes, production and pollution control equipments available. The NT$ 95.6 B, to be spent on pollution prevention, however, we feel that it is a small price to pay to achieve harmonious co-existence so that our commitment to the environment is not compromised.
